Capital Area Lady Gladiators Football Club

Bulletin  Board and News

During the month of May 2004, Capital Area Minor Football Association President Terry McIntyre visited Leo Hayes High, Oromocto High and Fredericton High to see if there was enough interest to form a team to compete in the proposed New Brunswick Women's Football League. Players must be 15 or older on December 31, 2004

A total of 34 potential players attended these meetings and expressed an interest to possibly be involved with the program. A list of names can be found in the "Player Contact Information" section.  The response has been sufficiently enthusiastic that efforts to form a team will move forward.

The 34 potential players have been put on a voicemail list and contacted. They are urged to recruit additional players to ensure that there are enough players to field a team. There is sufficient equipment available to equip 60 players and if necessary there can be two teams formed. Any players wishing to be added to the potential players list should call 458-0824 and leave their name and phone number.

The Daily Gleaner did a story about the Lady Gladiators on June 2. Hopefully the newspaper article will attract some players of university age or older. The vast  majority  of the players in the NBWFL will be high school age supplemented by some older players.

The first on field practice is scheduled for Saturday June 5 from 3 pm until 5 pm at Fredericton High School. This will be a shorts, T-Shirt and cleats or running shoes practice designed to introduce players to the fundamentals of football in a non-contact setting. This session will be called "Football for Women 101". There will be no charge for this practice. The rain date for this practice is Sunday June 6 from 1 pm until 3 pm at FHS.

If the turnout for the June 5 practice is sufficient we will also hold practices from 7-8:30 pm on W June 9  at LHHS and Th June 10 at FHS. These will also be non-contact practices similar to June 5. These two practices may conflict with some OHS player's exams. Education comes first. Any players who cannot attend these two practices but are still interested in playing are urged to call 458-0824 and leave a voicemail. A final decision on forming a team will be made at the conclusion of the June 10 practice. Equipment fitting and payment of the $125 registration fee is tentatively scheduled for Saturday June 12 at 1 pm at the Lady Beaverbrook Rink in Fredericton. We provide all equipment except for footwear. For player's who have not yet turned 18, a parent or guardian's permission signature will be required on the registration form.  This will be followed by the first "in gear" practice at 3 pm at FHS. We will also practice on Sunday June 13 from 1 pm to 3 pm, W June 16 from 7 pm until 8:30 pm and Th June 17 from 7 pm until 8:30 pm. The location of these practices will be determined by where the majority of our players live.

The team's first game is scheduled for Sunday June 20 at MacKenzie Field located next to Oromocto High School.

During the remainder of the season the team will practice on Tu and Th from 7 pm until 8:30 pm. The location of these practices will be determined by where the majority of our players live. Games will be on either Sa or Su. The season concludes with the league championship game on August 8.

The team's emphasis will be on "fun and participation".  Every player, regardless of ability, will get fair playing time on the field. Because of summer jobs, vacations and other activities we realize that players cannot attend all practices and games. In order to effectively participate in this program players should be able to attend at least one practice per week and play in at least three of the six regular season games.
