MacNaughton Junior Highlanders 24 Oromocto Junior Blues 22
This entertaining game
played on a frozen, wind swept field, brings to mind the old saying, "It
ain't over until it's over". This game would appear to be decided two times
before the outcome was finally determined.
MacNaughton received the
opening kickoff and was forced to punt. Eric Smith returned it 50 yards for the
touchdown and Jory Smith booted the convert to put the Blues ahead 8-0. The
Highlanders responded with a long grinding drive into the wind that that
consumed most of the remainder of the first quarter and resulted in a 5 yard
touchdown run that narrowed the score to 8-6.
In the second quarter,
with the wind at their backs, MacNaughton completed a long pass and run play
that took the ball to the Blues 5 yard line. From there the Highlanders would
score the go ahead touchdown that put them ahead 12-8 at halftime.
The Blues played the
third quarter going into the wind but were still able to put together a rather
unusual drive. A fake punt, a roughing the kicker call and two punts recovered
by an onside player moved the ball to the Highlander 25 yard line. From there
Mike Levandier scored on a slotback reverse play to give the Blues a 14-12 lead.
The convert was missed and this would prove to be very costly.
In the fourth quarter
MacNaugton was again able to mount a touchdown drive against the wind. Special
teams once more played a major role as a fake punt resulted in a 40 yard run all
the way down to the Oromocto 10 yard line. From there a quarterback keeper put
the Highlanders up 18-14.
With a little over three
minutes remaining in the game and the Blues mounting their own drive an errant
Oromocto pass was picked off and returned 50 yards by the Highlanders for a six
pointer and a 24-14 lead. So it appeared the game was over.
MacNaughton kicked
off and on the second play from scrimmage Blues speedster Eric Smith busted
loose up the middle for a 60 yard touchdown ramble. Jory Smith added the convert
to narrow the gap to 24-22. Oromocto's missed convert on its second touchdown
loomed large.
The Blues tried a
short kickoff and successfully recovered the ball on the Highlanders 45 yard
line. From there an Eric Smith sweep took them to the 25 yard line. With just
over a minute left Oromocto was first and ten on the MacNaughton 10 yard line
when they fumbled and the Highlanders recovered. For a second time the game
appeared to be over.
Oromocto's used
it's two timeouts to stop the clock and the defence forced the Highlander's to
turn the ball over on downs on their 25 yard line with 30 seconds remaining.
However, the Highlander defence stiffened and the Blues were forced to go for a
30 yard field goal on the last play of the game. The kick was short leaving
MacNaughton to escape with the narrow victory.

up 11-7 at halftime.
In the third

line only to be denied by a goal line stand. Fredericton would give up a safety
on the ensuing series to bring the score to 11-9 early in the fourth quarter.
There was no more
scoring until there was less than 7 minutes remaining in the game. Korey
MacKenzie picked off an errant Black Kats pass and returned it 50 yards for the
go ahead touchdown. The Blues lead 15-11. With less than three minutes remaining
Eric Smith ran back a punt 50 yards to put the Blues up 21-11.
