Bantam Huskies cop Maritime championship

The Hampton Huskies defeated Truro, N.S. for the Maritime
bantam football championship over the weekend. |

The Hampton Jr. Huskies traveled to Halifax and came back with the Fundy Minor
Football Association's first Maritime bantam football championship since 1967.
The Huskies beat the previously undefeated Nova Scotia champions, the Truro
Freightliners, 27-6 in the championship game at the Saint Mary's University
Huskies Stadium to capture the title.
Tight end Matt Henderson scored three touchdowns for the Huskies, two on
receptions from quarterback Eoin MacIntyre in the first quarter and another on a
fumble recovery in the fourth.
Running back Marcel Rochon was a major force as well, leading the offence and
rumbling in for a TD in the second quarter.
MacIntyre kicked an extra point and ran for a two-point convert to round out the
scoring.
The Huskies defence was also solid, allowing just one Truro major in the fourth
quarter. Hampton, who actually lost to the Moncton Highlanders in the provincial
final, are the first FMFA team to win the Maritime crown since Canada's
centennial year.

The
Bantam Provincial Final was held in Hampton this afternoon and what a game it
was !!
Hampton scored in the first quarter , a 26 yard TD by Todd
Floyd which went unconverted. There was no scoring in the second or third
quarters as the teams fought back and forth. In the 4th, the Highlanders
marched deep into the Huskies end of the field, only to have Husky Clint
McGregor recover a Moncton fumble. With 22 seconds remaining, the Highlanders
fired off a "Hail Mary" which was caught on the Husky 1 yard line
and with no time remaining on the clock Dylan Hollohan plunged into the
Husky end zone to tie the score at 6 - 6. Highlanders kicker Thomas Brady
cooley kicked the convert through for a 8 - 6 win.
With the victory the
Highlanders won the right to play in the Maritime final on Nov. 20 in Halifax.
However Moncton has declined the invitation. Consequently the Huskies will now
play the Truro Freightliners for the Ed Edmonds Cup at Huskies Stadium in
Halifax at 1 pm.
November 6
New Brunswick Semi-Final
Moncton Junior Highlanders 20 Oromocto Junior Blues 15 (2OT)
Dylan Hollohan was a one man wrecking crew in leading the Highlanders to an
exciting double overtime victory over the Blues.
Oromocto took the opening kickoff and drove to the Moncton 30 yard line before
being forced to punt. Hollohan fielded the punt in his own end zone and then
raced 110 yards for six points. Geoff Gerhart kicked the convert to put the
Highlanders ahead 8-0.
The Blues
once again mounted a drive but stalled at the Moncton 20 yard line where they
elected to try a field goal. The kick was wide but the Highlander returner
fumbled the ball in his own end zone. The Blues Mykel Warford recovered the
fumble for a touchdown. The convert was no good leaving Moncton ahead 8-6 after
one quarter.
In the second
quarter Oromocto gambled on third down on its own 35 and turned the ball over to
the Highlanders. From there the Highlanders used the running of Hollohan to
drive to the Blues 3 yard line. Hollohan would score from there. The convert was
no good and the score was 14-6 at the half.
After a scoreless
third quarter, Oromocto went to the air. Jordan Heather hooked up with Mitchell
Dingley on a 30 yard pass and run play to the Moncton 5 yard line. Two
plays later Tyler Patten bulled into the end zone to make it 14-12. Patten then
kicked the convert to knot the score at 14.
With less than a minute
remaining the Highlanders had the ball on the Blues 15 yard line and attempted
to punt for a single to win the game. However the Blues defence rose up and
blocked the punt to force overtime.
In the first overtime
shootout Oromocto's Seth Gillan got loose down the left sideline and went in for
the major. However an offside negated the play and the teams remained tied at 14
after the first overtime.
In the second shootout
the Blues marched to the Moncton 10 yard line where they opted to punt for a
single to go ahead 15-14. The Highlanders countered in their end of the shootout
by moving the ball to the Blues 20 yard line. From there on second and 10,
Moncton QB Scott Kelly launched a pass to Hollohan at the Oromocto 5 yard line.
The Blues defenders in the area misjudged the pass. It ended up in Hollohan's
arms and he ran unimpeded into the end zone to give the Highlanders the 20-15

victory.
Moncton advances to the
provincial Bantam final next Sunday against the Hampton Junior Huskies.
That game will be a 1 p.m. start at Hampton High School.
October 30
Capital Area Championship
Oromocto Junior Blues 12 Fredericton Junior Black Kats 6
Devin Kearny's 40 yard touchdown run staked the Kats to a 6-0 halftime lead.
In the
third quarter the Blues drove deep in Fredericton territory on two occasions but
only came away with one safety conceded by the Kats to narrow the score to 6-2.
The same thing happened in the fourth quarter and once more Fredericton conceded
a safety to make the score 6-4.
Finally
with only three minutes left the Blues got a 3 yard touchdown run from Tyler
Patten and a convert from Seth Gillan to put them up 12-6.
The
Kats would come close to regaining the lead when QB Elliott Carr found Brett
Lockard for a 55 yard pass and run play to the Blues 5 yard line. However, an
offside on another Kats player negated the play and the Kats would not get that
close to the Blues goal line again.
October 23
Capital Area Semi-Final
Fredericton Junior Black Kats 36 Northside Junior Lions 0
Devin Kearny paced the Kats with three touchdowns. Elliott Carr added two more. Zach Cann
kicked
three converts.
October 19
Oromocto Junior Blues 34 Fredericton Junior Black Kats 0
Seth Gillan lead the Blues with two
touchdowns. Blues QB Jordan Heather hooked up with Mykel Warford for the one
Oromocto major while Jordan Gardiner and Heather each rushed for six points.
Warford also added two converts.
October 12
7th Annual North-South Bowl Game
Fredericton Junior Black Kats 20 Northside Junior Lions 0
The
Lions took the opening kickoff and drove all the way down to the Kats three yard
line before failing to score on a third down gamble. From there the Kats
advanced as far as their own 40 yard line before Devin Kearny broke loose for a
70 yard touchdown run. Zach Cann added the convert to give Fredericton an 8-0
lead at the half.
The
Junior Kats would get second half touchdowns from Kearny and Cann to seal the
win. With this victory they won their sixth consecutive North-South Bowl and
lead the series 6-1 since its inception in 1999.
October 5
Oromocto Junior Blues 20 Northside Junior Lions 8
Seth Gillan lead the Blues with two
touchdowns and a convert. Blues QB Jordan Heather hooked up with Chris Hillier
for the other Oromocto major.
Ricardo Funes had the Lions TD on a pass from
Brandon Vrolyk. Tommy Broad kicked the convert.
October 2
Oromocto Junior Blues 34 Northside Junior Lions 8
Seth Gillan lead the Blues with three
touchdowns and two converts. Mitchell Dingley and Mykel Warford scored the other
Blues TD's.
Ricardo Funes had the Lions TD on a pass from
Brandon Vrolyk. Tommy Broad kicked the convert.
September 28 Oromocto Junior Blues

Jordan Gardiner rushed for three Blues
TD's. Jordan
Heather added another. Seth Gillan kicked two converts and ran for a third. The
Lions conceded a safety.
September 25 Fredericton Junior Black Kats
30 Oromocto Junior Blues 20
Elliott Carr rushed for one Kats touchdown
and passed to Ryan Downe for two others. Carr also connected with Brett Lockhart
for six points. Zack Cann added three converts.
Jordan Gardiner rushed for two Blues TD's. Jordan
Heather hooked up with Chris Hillier for a touchdown. Seth Gillan added a
convert.
September 21
Fredericton Junior Black Kats 22 Northside Junior Lions 6
Elliott Carr rushed for one touchdown
and passed to Ryan Downe for another in the Kats win. Devin Kearny had the other
Fredericton major. Zack Cann added two converts.
Tommy Broad's scintillating 108 yard touchdown
run accounted for the Lions scoring. Brendan Cornford had two
interceptions.
September 14

Elliott Carr, Zack Cann, Ryan Downe and
Devin Kearny each scored one TD for the Kats. Cann added four converts and a
single. The Kats defence scored two safeties.
September 11
Oromocto Junior Blues 22 Fredericton Junior Black Kats 0
Oromocto quarterback Jordan Heather ran
70 yards for one touchdown and passed 30 yards to Mykel Warford for another to
lead the Blues to victory. Jordan Gardiner had the other TD. Seth Gillan added a
kicked convert and the Blues defence recorded a safety.
