Week 7- August 6

Burchill Trophy Game

Capital Area Gladiators 9  Saint John Wanderers 1

The Gladiators and Wanderers hooked up in a classic battle between two unyielding defences. Neither team's offence could sustain a drive. At halftime the two teams were locked in a scoreless stalemate.
By the third quarter the wind had picked up to the point where it became a factor in the game. Reese Roche's 60 yard punt bounced out the back of the Gladiators' end zone giving the Wanderers a single point and what appeared to be enough points for a victory.
In the fourth quarter the Gladiators, with the wind at their back, began to push Saint John back into their own end. Finally, with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, Gladiator quarterback Allison Brooks hooked up with Andrew Fisher on 40 yard touchdown pass. Jeff Taylor added the 2 point conversion. Capital Area added a single by Dave Pepin and the defence did the rest as the Gladiators laid claim to the Burchill Trophy.

In the second quarter Aiden McCormack had a 30 yard run for a major and Jon Haines scampered 70 yards for another. By halftime the Wanderers were up 32-0.
Kevin Muise would add a 45 yard touchdown ramble in the third quarter to close out the scoring. Ron Manning successfully converted all five touchdowns.

The Gladiators added to their lead in the second quarter when Brooks found Andrew Fisher with a two yard touchdown strike. Gibson again kicked a two pint conversion to give the Gladiators a 16-0 halftime lead.
Saint John was finally able to mount a drive late in the fourth quarter, capping it with Shawn MacAulay's 20 yard touchdown pass to Reese Roche. Ron Manning added the 2 point conversion.

On their first possession the Gladiators fumbled the ball on their own 5 yard line. After holding the Wanderers out of the end zone for 4 plays an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty set Saint John up again, first and goal on the Capital Area 2 yard line. Still the Gladiator defence would not yield and Saint John was forced to settle for Ron Manning's 10 yard field goal.
Capital Area moved ahead in the second quarter when quarterback Pat Dollimore hit Jeff Taylor on a 30 yard touchdown pass. Saint John would regain the lead in the third on quarterback Shawn MacAulay's 10 yard pass to Tyrell Sparks. Ron Manning booted the 2 point conversion.
With time ticking away in the fourth quarter the Gladiators started a drive on their own 30 and methodically marched the ball down the field. On the last play of the game Dollimore passed to Danny Gibson for the game winning touchdown. Jeff  Taylor booted the 2 point conversion.
