August 6 Spartans clinch title in touch football loop Player of the game Andrew Hickey scored a pair of touchdowns and threw for another as the Labatt Budweiser Spartans defeated St. Mary's Entertainment Centre 20-7 in the final of the Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League played at Chapman Field. Hickey picked off an Allison Brooks pass and ran it in for a touchdown in the first quarter, threw a scoring strike to Erik Watson which was converted by Justin Conn, and then added another major to pace the Spartans attack. Bobby McIntyre accounted for the lone major for St. Mary's, hauling in a 40-yard strike from Brooks. Spartans advanced to the final with a 28-8 win over Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Steelers behind Hickey's three touchdown passes while St. Mary's advanced after beating Caitlin MacTavish Realty Ltd. Mounties 33-14 in the other semifinal. Justin Conn was named league MVP while Hickey was named top offensive player. Jordan Heather was rookie of the year while Dave Skillen was named top defensive player. Brooks was the top quarterback and McIntyre and Nathan Heather tied for the top receivers' award. |
August 4 Touch football league playdowns on Thursday It'll be first place Labatt Budweiser Spartans led by Andrew Hickey and David Skillen playing winless (0-6) Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Steelers led by Jake Thomas, Thursday at 6:15 in one of two Garrison District Ale House Touch Football League semifinal games at Leo Hayes back field. The second semi at 7:30 pits the second place (4-2) Caitlin MacTavish Realty Mounties led by Jordan and Nathan Heather against third place St. Mary's Entertainment Centre (4-2) and led by Allison Brooks. Winners head up the hill to UNB's Chapman Field later Thursday to meet in the final beginning at 10:30. The league's awards banquet including MVP is slated for Friday. In statistics released by the league, Jordan Heather, Hickey and Brooks each led the league in TD passes with 15. Nathan Heather had seven TD receptions to that in that department. Lions' Bobby McIntyre and Steelers Dan Gibson each had six TD receptions. |
July 23 Jordan Heather tosses four touchdown strikes In Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League play Thursday, the Caitlin MacTavish Realty Ltd. Mounties, 4-2, defeated the Scott Janes State Farm Steelers 26-14 behind four touchdown passes from Jordan Heather. Heather connected twice on touchdown strikes to his brother Nathan, as well as single TDs to Chris Hillier and Hugh Croll. Nathan Heather also scored a conversion for the Mounties. Responding for the Steelers, now 0-6, were Jared McGinn with two
touchdown tosses, one to Dan Gibson and another to Jake Thomas. Thomas
hauled in eight passes on the night for 110 yards. Gibson added a
two-point safety for the Steelers. A.J. Durling, David Carr, Ethan McClellan and Erik Watson caught touchdown passes for the Spartans, who received two-point converts from David Dolan and McClellan, who had two on the night. Responding for St. Mary's were Allison Brooks with two touchdown tosses, one each to Nathan Paul and Bobby McIntyre. Brooks added a kicking convert for one point to round out the scoring. League play resumes Thursday, July 30 at 6:15 p.m. on the Leo Hayes High School back field. Admission is free. |
July 16 Skillen sparks Spartans In Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League play on Thursday, the Budweiser Spartans put the hammer down on the Caitlin MacTavish Realty Ltd. Mounties by a score of 39-12. Buoyed by two end zone interceptions by Dave Skillen, both returned for touchdowns -one by Skillen and one he pitched off to Dave Dolan - the Spartans and Mounties entered into an aerial assault in which the Spartans were merciless. Andrew Hickey threw for three touchdowns, completing six of 12 passes for 185 yards, and older brother Sean came on to throw for 60 yards and another touchdown. Andrew Hubbard and Justin Conn each caught two TD's for the Spartans, with Erik Watson catching two converts and Conn scoring a touchback. Jordan Heather led the Mounties, throwing for 310 yards and two TD's, in going 15 for 27, with the two costly picks. Catching TD passes for the Mounties were Nathan Heather and Chris Hiller. The game leaves each team with identical 3-2 records. In the second game, the St.Mary's Entertainment Center Lions defeated the Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Steelers 27-19 behind four touchdown passes from Allison Brooks. Brooks ended the night 19 for 32 for 350 yards. Mike Walsh caught two of them, with Andrew Fisher and Bobby McIntyre catching the others. Jeff Landine scored three converts. For the Steelers, Jared McGinn was 21-30 for 215 yards and a TD. Robert Touchie and Jaret Phillips also tossed touchdown passes on option plays. Phillips, Touchie and Danny Gibson all caught touchdown passes for the Steelers, who fall to 0-5. The Lions move into sole possession of first place with a 4-1 mark. July 9 Mounties suffer first touch football loss In Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League play, the front-running Caitlin MacTavish Realty Ltd. Mounties lost for the first time this season, dropping a 20-12 decision to the St. Mary's Entertainment Center Lions 20-12. Bobby McIntyre grabbed a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Allison Brooks and Alex Rose snared another. Jordan Heather threw two touchdowns for the Mounties, one each to Mitch McCoy and Jordan Gardiner. The Lions and Mounties share first with 3-1 records. In the other game, the Budweiser Spartans evened their record at 2-2, defeating the Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Steelers by a score of 29-12. Andrew Hickey threw four touchdown passes, with TD receptions hauled in by David Dolan, Ethan McClellan and Erik Watson. Justin Conn returned a kickoff 80 yards for the other Spartan score and added a single point touchback on a kickoff. Steelers quarterback Jared McGinn tossed touchdown passes to Alex Wickwire and Danny Gibson. Gibson added two converts for the 0-4 Steelers. |
July 2 Heather's three TD passes lead Mounties past Spartans In Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League play Thursday night, the Labatt Bud Lite Spartans' David Skillen scored one touchdown and Justin Conn intercepted two passes but it was not enough to overcome three Jordan Heather touchdown passes as the Caitlin MacTavish Realty Mounties defeated the Spartans 20-6. Also figuring in the scoring for the Mounties were Ron Squires, Chris Hillier and Nathan Heather, with touchdown receptions and converts from Ron Squires and Jordan Heather. Tossing the lone touchdown for the Spartans was Andrew Hickey. In the other league game, the Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Steelers fell 21-13 to the St. Mary's Entertainment Center Lions. Leading the Lion attack was Allison Brooks throwing three touchdowns - two to Donald Guy and the other to Alex Rose. Alex Paul and Brooks provided the converts for the Lions. Leading the Steelers was Jaret Phillips with two touchdown passes and a convert. Danny Gibson and Joey Dyer caught touchdown passes for the Steelers and Danny Gibson also had a convert. The win gives the Mounties solid footing at the top of league standings with a 3-0 record, with the Lions holding down second place with a 2-1 record. The Spartans are in third with a record of 1-2, while the Steelers bring up the rear with a dismal 0-3 count. The Steelers eagerly await the return of Fredericton's Jake Thomas from his stint with the Canadian team at the inaugural IAAF world junior football championship in Canton, Ohio - Canada meets the U.S. in Saturday's 2 p.m. (AT) final - and will have him back in the fold for next Thursday's 7:30 p.m. match against the Spartans. The Lions will play the upstart Mounties at 6:15 p.m. Both games will be played at the Leo Hayes High School back field and admission is free. |
June 25 Spartans celebrate Skillen’s return In Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League play Thursday night, the Labatt Bud Lite Spartans celebrated the return of Dave Skillen from his Montreal Alouettes tryout by defeating the Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Steelers 20-12, and move to 1-1. Leading the Spartans were quarterback Andrew Hickey with three TD passes, one each to Joey Dyer, Justin Conn and the imposing Skillen. Hickey also connected with Skillen on a two point convert. The Steelers, now 0-2 and playing this night without national junior football team member, Jake Thomas, got two touchdowns from Danny Gibson, catching a touchdown a piece from Jared McGinn and Jaret Phillips. Derek Broad was the third Steeler to figure in the scoresheet, throwing an interception. The Caitlin MacTavish Realty Ltd. Mounties defeated the St. Mary’s Entertainment Center Lions by a score of 20-19 in the other league tilt. Leading the way for the 2-0 Mounties were Nathan Heather, with three TD passes. Heather connected with his brother Jordan for two scores and Chris Hillier for the other. Tim Stacey added two one point converts. For St. Mary’s, 1-1, Bobby McIntyre ran for two TD’s and threw for another to Alex Rose, as Nathan Paul added a single point convert for the Lions in a losing effort. June 10 Brooks leads St. Mary's to touch football win In Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League play, St. Mary's shut out the Fredericton Spartans 20-0. Allison Brooks fired touchdown passes to Don Guy, Alex Rose and Jonas Colter. Bobby McIntyre and Guy added converts while Nathan Paul had the lone interception. The Oromocto Mounties defeated the Fredericton Steelers 8-0 behind a touchdown pass from Jordan Heather to Nathan Heather and a touchback by Paul Doucette. The lone interception was by Jordan Heather of the Mounties. League play resumes next Thursday at Leo Hayes Field, with games at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m. |
