Raiders upset Gators in tier 2 touch footballPublished Tuesday August 10th, 2010Labatt's Garrison District Ale House Fredericton Touch Football League finished its 2010 season and playoffs over the weekend. In Tier 2 semifinal action on Thursday, the Capital Area DQ Gladiators lost to the Budweiser Raiders 20-13. The next night, in the Tier 2 final, the Raiders upset the top-seeded Bishops Funeral Home Gators by a 24-12 count. The Raiders were led in both games by the play of Jake Thomas. In the first game, Thomas had 100 receiving yards, a rushing TD, a sack and added 60 passing yards. Brendan Cornford had 330 yards passing to go along with two TD passes and another running TD. Mitchell Cormier had 60 yards receiving to go along with a pick to support the Raiders cause. The Gladiators were led by Jeff Taylor's 240 passing yards and two TDs. Cody Stewart was Taylor's main target, ringing up 130 yards receiving and two TDs, adding two interceptions on defence. Kyle Vye had three sacks for the Glads. In the league Tier 2 final, Thomas replaced Cornford at quarterback and threw for 410 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Raiders to the win over the heavily favored Gators. Dave Boyce had two touchdown receptions and 150 yards receiving for the Raiders. John Hickey threw for 175 yards and two touchdown passes, one each to Emmitt Deighan and Chris Carson in the loss. The Tier 2 final win by the Raiders wraps up the season. The Tier 1 championship was won by the Caitlin MacTavish Realty Ltd. Sun Devils last week. Sun Devil quarterback Jordan Heather was named the league's MVP and also his team's MVP. Other team MVPs were AJ Durling of the All-Star Sports Academy Roughriders, Cody Stewart of the Gladiators, Deighan of the Gators, Jake Thomas of the Raiders, Simon Bissonnette of the Lighting Gallery Chargers, Allison Brooks of the Grad House Graduates, Matt Rogers of the Scott Janes State Farm Insurance Ltd. Steelers and Josh Campbell of the Booker Realty Blue Bombers.
